EP REVIEW: The Humour In Hell – Fangs Out

When it comes to heavy music, the West Midlands, England, stands as one of the most important regions in the world. From BLACK SABBATH and JUDAS PRIEST to ANAAL NATHRAKH and NAPALM DEATH, some of the greatest names in metal have all been plucked from the same tree, and that root system has continued to produce wave after wave of plucky young upstarts like hardcore outfit FANGS OUT, who are releasing their third EP, The Humour In Hell

They hit the ground running with the raucous It’s Your Funeral; imagine CANCER BATS doing an impression of THE CHARIOT playing EVERY TIME I DIE and you’re in the right region for FANGS OUT. The track swings wildly from venomous verse to euphoric chorus with razor sharp precision, barely letting up for a second before one final stomping breakdown that should have your neck hurting.

All The Best Drugs slows things down a little – only very slightly – without losing any of its white hot intensity. Within the metallic hardcore mayhem, there’s a healthy dose of riffage too, which comes to the fore most of all on Sabbath Town. Paying homage to their local heroes BLACK SABBATH, this love letter to Birmingham is the perfect illustration of the city’s powerful pedigree.

But it’s frontman Mikey White’s feverish vocal performance that gives FANGS OUT their most arresting feature. The aggression he packs into every syllable is breathtaking and the serrated crackle of his screams make him as easily identifiable as the Keith Buckleys and Josh Scogins of the world.

FANGS OUT are not afraid to go bold, and The Humour In Hell dishes up the proof in spades. This 15-minute thrill ride breezes by and leaves a cloud of fun and madness in its wake. With three solid EPs under their belts, it feels time for them to look toward a full release next and really show us once and for all what they’re capable of, because if this is anything to go by, they could produce something very special indeed.
