Fit For An Autopsy: Playing To Your Strengths

It’s amazing to see the sheer level of progression displayed by New Jersey’s FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY, growing in confidence with each passing release and becoming one of the most formidable and consistent bands in deathcore. The Sea of Tragic Beasts was regarded as a modern metal masterpiece and really set the benchmark for themselves and other bands in the scene and follow up Oh What the Future Holds is poised to smash even those expectations.

“If you were already a fan of the band you can expect everything you’ve enjoyed about our music thus far with a few new tricks thrown in,” explains guitarist and god-tier producer Will Putney. “I know it’s cliche but this is everyone in the bands’ favourite album we’ve done. We’re really excited about it and we’re so happy it’s finally getting out into the world.”

Will handles the majority of the heavy lifting with regards to the writing process of an album cycle and whilst FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY pride themselves on their song structures and captivating moods, Will doesn’t focus too much on this prior to the creative process getting underway. “I go into these records and what comes out, comes out, you know? It’s usually a reflection of the stuff we’re into as musicians and I definitely wanted to try new things and continue to push the boundaries of what the band could do,” he explains. “There was a bit of trial and error and we definitely canned a few songs along the way. I’ve written more than I ever have for a release. We just go with what feels good and I hope people like it. I tend to just start cooking up ideas and when I get really into the process and start feeling inspired I start to think of any potential themes. We like to move quickly on albums, we really enjoy making them and for me, it’s the fun part of being in a band.”

Being the man of many talents that he is, Will really takes a significant level of stress out of the process and removes the requirement of reliance on any outside personnel. This was a very handy set of skills to possess during the pandemic where face to face contact was very limited. “I pretty much handle most of the writing in the band. So getting together wasn’t as much of a major issue,” admits Will. “Everybody has computers and we can pass stuff back and forth. I generally work on initial ideas and stuff and then pass it on to the guys to see what their thoughts are. We don’t tend to have any issues communicating or getting a record together and the schedule was pretty relaxed. We didn’t feel like we were under the gun to have to get flights to meet up or meet a specific deadline. It was pretty laid back. It came together easier than any record we’ve ever made. It was really fun to have these kind of open windows of time to just work on music and it really helped get my brain clear to work on lyrics and work with Joe. We were able to do multiple sessions and we’ve never really done that before. I kind of wish we always had this kind of time to record, it was awesome!”

Due to the sheer level of commitment that is required of Will for his studio responsibilities he made the decision to not participate in any touring. This arrangement looks to have worked best for all parties involved. “The band really want to be full time and obviously with the state of the world right now it’s been tricky but for me I never wanted to come and go and create problems and throw a wrench into everything and that was the whole reason we added a third guitarist to avoid all of that,” he states. “Tim is an awesome guitarist, he’s better than me and he can play my stuff cleaner than I can. I think the roles we all have right now make perfect sense. I’m honestly so busy producing records that the idea of me going on tour for months and months is almost an impossible task. I love making records and that’s something I really wouldn’t want to give up to spend all of my time on the road. Not that I don’t enjoy it but I feel like this is what I was made to do and I’ll continue to do it. We play to our strengths and we’ve achieved great things so far.”

Will and his team at Graphic Nature Audio have become synonymous in the world of metal, producing albums from the likes of THY ART IS MURDER, THE GHOST INSIDE and EVERY TIME I DIE to name a few. 2022 opens a new chapter for the team as they relocate from their residence in Belleville to a new location. “We’ve worked at the studio in Belleville for the past like 12 years and that was our home base for Graphic Nature Audio with myself, Steve, Randy and Matt who have been working there full time now for a number of years,” he discusses. “Unfortunately, we suffered a pretty bad flood in the fall and it caused a lot of irreparable damage to about half of the studio. We decided it might be time to find a new home. As of January we were out of there and setting up shop in a new spot right now. It’s gonna take a minute. Filling a studio is a hard and long process but we have a good plan in place.”
