Death MetalIntroducing

INTRODUCING: Coffinborn

Hungarian death metal trio COFFINBORN have finally released their highly anticipated debut album. While this is their first full-length, the band have amassed an underground following over a decade awaiting a full length release. We caught up with guitarist and vocalist Disguster about the unusual recording circumstances and the journey to get to it.

It’s definitely been a ride to get to creating Cadaveric Retribution. While the album has been in the works for a long time, it didn’t at first appear that it might take so long to be made. “To be fair, when we started COFFINBORN it developed really fast,” Disguster explains. “We put together the four songs for the MCD almost instantly and got a record deal with Xtreem Music really fast, but then me and Blasphemy moved abroad and just nothing happened to the band. I already had the songs written back then for the debut album, but we just couldn’t figure out how to arrange to record it until now.”

With the band constantly having a buzz within the community online for many years, it’s been received by fans as a triumph. “It’s nice to hear that people are excited about our long-awaited debut album. The writing process wasn’t as easy as our previous release due to logistics. I moved to the UK and Blasphemy moved to Germany, whilst Churchburner stayed in our hometown, Szeged. I wrote most of the songs around 2014-2015 but we didn’t have a chance to record it that time.”

For those who have come across COFFINBORN over the past decade, a solid slab of death metal the likes of BOTH THROWER, DEATH and ASPHYX. The trio have remained true to the heart of what death metal is. “We wanted to put together a raw death metal album and to achieve that true feel of classic death metal,” Disguster explains. “I changed a few parts and wrote a couple of new songs instead of the old ones but they are all in the similar style. I love how the record turned out. I probably would change some of my solos but that’s just me. I always find something which I would have done differently. Nevertheless, I like the songs, the sound and the cover artwork is also stunning.”

Time and distance being an issue to getting the work done, it wasn’t until recently that the right communications could be put together to get all members parts collated. “When me and Blasphemy managed to record our other project, ROTHADAS in 2019 we discussed that we definitely should try to record the COFFINBORN album the same way,” Disguster tells us. “We didn’t have any rehearsals. I put together a couple new songs, changed a few parts in the old ones and sent it to Blasphemy who recorded the drums and his vocals when he was in Szeged. Then I recorded the guitars and my vocal parts here in the UK and then Churchburner recorded the bass in Szeged as well. It was definitely a different way to write and record this album than what we are normally used to but I think it came out great.”

As is often the case with bands these days, the saving grace of COFFINBORN has been the quick access to communication outside of being local to each other. “We maintained the communication between ourselves online over the years. We are still friends. Luckily our friendship hasn’t faded over the years despite us all living far away from each other. I think without that we definitely couldn’t have recorded the album and the band would have broken up eventually.”

While Cadaveric Retribution has wall to wall hard hitting death metal, interestingly enough the band hasn’t managed to play or even rehearse together. “Yeah, we still haven’t played live,” he notes. “I hope one day we can do a couple of shows as well but at the moment it’s not possible for us due to the long distance and our busy personal lives. Musically nothing has changed. We just carried on where we left off.” With such a strong sound, no doubt fans and newcomers alike will eagerly anticipate any shows that may come from this record. However, it’s likely that fans are used to waiting it out for COFFINBORN, and will be stoked to have Cadaveric Retribution in their ears in any form.

Cadaveric Retribution is out now via Xtreem Music.
