INTRODUCING: Modern Error

There’s often a beauty to the work created in the metal scene, that takes the real depths of a human experience and channels it into something universal and yet profoundly personal. MODERN ERROR appears to be the amalgamation of hardcore’s best components in this regard. Boasting a harsh tone with some stunning soundscapes, the honest vocals and synthetic edge means that the band have a great basis for their future.

While the hardcore scene might be the most obvious genre to place MODERN ERROR’s sound in, there’s a far more expansive reach to where they might go next. Vocalist Zak Pinchin makes a profound point that things aren’t always so hard and fast in their nature. “I’d say [our sound] currently, it’s a progressive post hardcore and emotional mix with cinematic sonics. However, we will always be a progression.”

The Four piece comprises of Zak Pinchin, his brother Kel Pinchin (guitar), Aurélien Mariat (bass) and Conor Nicholls (drums). Not looking to be put in a box, MODERN ERROR is a journey into the self and beyond. “I think we, with the idea of self-escape in mind, try to bring a surreal world that says something about reality” Zak says. “[By calling ourselves MODERN ERROR] the intention was to give ourselves a name that encapsulated everything we ever wanted to talk about through art and music. And mostly that was the idea of talking about the idea of change and the error of modern times.”

To have such a sound, where the hard and painful is coupled so well with subtle movements of electronic and acoustic peace is a great parallel to the human emotional spectrum in itself. We’re not so straight forward to have a simplistic nature, there are many layers. In the same way, MODERN ERROR look to encapsulate the duality of change in their music.

The way MODERN ERROR approach the world is very much from a focus on movement. They see things shift and evolve, for better or worse, in all aspects of life. It’s no surprise then that the scale of that personal stimulus in their music comes from a variety of mediums. “In terms of music, we are inspired by a world of artists who have brought their own to the world; NINE INCH NAILS, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE etc. We are inspired by films and the process/structure of films also. Lyrically I think it’s the idea of applying internal/self-emotions to the modern world and explaining some sort of outlook of human interaction.”

MODERN ERROR’s debut EP Lost In The Noise is a collective of songs that demonstrate the band’s determination of sonic progression outright. “The process was quite staggered, but I felt that helped generate the different feelings and progression of sonics we wanted throughout. The idea was to simple show a progression of sound rather than hide behind dead demos until things were all in ‘one place’.”

While everything on the EP appears to be written from a very personal perspective, the way that reached listeners took the band by surprise, as Zak explains. “It wasn’t the intention, but we have definitely experienced listeners reaching out to say how much it relates to them or their situation and I think that that’s what is incredible about music, the fact it can resonate on different levels through the abstraction of sound.”

So, where next for MODERN ERROR? It’ll be no shock that while they’re excited for the future, they’re not elevating towards one path or another. “Honestly, we take it as it comes – I know fully there will be more works to experience and hopefully show MODERN ERROR  in different ways. We can find out together.”
