Top 10 Pantera songs by iMonolith

Distorted Sound is delighted to share the top 10 PANTERA songs by IMONOLITH!

Comprised of ex members of Devin Townsend, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, FEAR FACTORY, THREAT SIGNAL and more, IMONOLITH, are a new star-studded metal powerhouse. A band whose mission is simple: to write the heaviest riffs, the biggest hooks and most monstrous grooves. Given the impressive pedigree of each player, they do exactly this. Running at the core of their collective influence is PANTERA so we reached out to the band to give us their collective top 10 songs!

Jon Howard (Vocals)

Walk – This was my very first taste of PANTERA. It was 1994 and I was in grade 7 when someone showed me this song. It tore my fuckin head off!! I was more of a rock kid just starting to hear metal for the first time. So this song blew my mind to the energy and the aggression that was possible with metal.

Floods – Guitar solo! C’mon man this is like the most epic melodic guitar solo ever!! Its one of those solos you can actually sing along too. It always gives me chills… The whole vibe of this tune, vocals and music, just resonates with me and offers a ton of inspiration even to this day. And the lonely guitar outro at the end in the rain… amazing. This will always be a favourite song of mine.

Brian Waddell (Guitars)

Cowboys from Hell – I think this one is a pretty obvious choice for me simply because it was the first PANTERA song I heard. I remember the video coming on and thinking what the hell is this? That opening guitar into the main riff had me sold instantly.

Domination – This was another song that struck me right away. The opening is an indication this song is gonna kick into high gear. And the solos in this song by Dimebag made it very clear there was a new guitar hero on the heavy metal block. The outro is one of the greatest things ever recorded.

Kai Huppunen (Guitars)

Psycho Holiday – The opening groove and riff in this song kicks ass. It makes you want to turn it up to 11!!! Their ability to mash numerous changing riffs together to make it sound like one song is impressive.

Cemetary Gates – One of my all time favourite PANTERA songs. They created a song structure that’s outside the box. I have so much appreciation for Dime‘s ever changing riffs and emotional solos. The vocal notes Phil hits at the end of the song are unexpected and deadly. This song takes you places.

Byron Stroud (Bass)

Hellbound – I really like the production on Reinventing the Steel. It’s raw and in your face. The bass tone on this song is great. There is some killer grooves on this song. And who doesn’t like a good ol fashion Phaser guitar tone.

Revolution is my Name – This is another great song on Reinventing the Steel. The bass playing and tone is some of the best Rex has ever done, in my opinion. Lyrically I can totally relate to this song. I think the brothers did a great job self producing this record.

Ryan Van Poederooyen (Drums)

Mouth for War – To put it simply, Dime‘s guitar riff in the verse of this song is easily one of my favourite metal riffs of all time. It’s crushing and it hits hard. Phil’s vocal performance sounds pissed off and heavy as fuck… the whole band is on fire on this track. This is easily one of my favourite PANTERA songs. It proves you can groove and still be as heavy as anything out there.

Becoming – I think it’s pretty obvious, as a drummer, why I love this tune. Vinnie’s intro drum beat is bad ass. That’s by far my favourite beat that Vinnie ever wrote. Add Dime’s creative riffing and you got another classic PANTERA tune. I also gotta’ give a nod to Dimebag’s guitar solo in this song as well. He shows that you don’t always have to shred in metal to come up with an awesome and interesting guitar solo. That solo rules. This song rules.
