ALBUM REVIEW: Endless Motion – Press Club

Melbourne-based rockers PRESS CLUB return with their third studio album, Endless Motion, a record that has been a long time coming after two years’ worth of delays and frustration thanks to COVID. Originally set to be recorded and released in 2020, the unfortunate timing and lockdown allowed the band to rethink the material they had prepared and to start afresh. What we now have presented today is a record full of frustration at false-starts, normality being uprooted, and life events being disrupted.

Opening with the sound of feedback from a recording studio session, Eugene starts the record off strong once the punchy instruments and strong vocals kick into what becomes a brilliant pop-rock style track. Coward Street continues that brilliance in a track that is reminiscent of MARMOZETS‘ gritty rock style as the lyrics call out someone’s constant criticism of you and everything you do. To them you can do no right, so screw them – who cares what they think?

Endless Motion refuses to stay in one box or to fixate on one style or genre. We get spoken-word style vocals accompanied by fast guitar and bass in Untitled Wildlife, while Cancelled is a fantastic punk track that goes in so many different directions that blends beautifully with the gritty Lifelines as the band reflect on past two years constant disappointment and false-starts. And the title track is just a song that would be amazing live.

Other highlights include Glasgow, a fun, upbeat guitar-driven song that reflects on the ever-crazy tour life where you wake up in a new busy city each day. It’s at times confusing and terrifying, yet it’s one of the most exciting things and you wouldn’t trade it for anything. This reflection continues in I Can Change, a song written during lockdown when the band looked back at the times in which they complained about their gruelling schedule and wishing more than anything that they could be doing that right now. It’s an understanding in that this is a part of living out their dream and wishing that their attitude at that point could change. They’ll never take it for granted again.

On first listen of this record, you’ll find that Endless Motion leaves you feeling happy; there’s something about the record that makes you feel nostalgic and comfortable. What we think is that this band is a bright light in the recent emergence of new musicians on the rock scene. Charismatic, full of attitude, fun and gritty, this record is just brilliant. PRESS CLUB are a real gem and we are very excited to see what comes next for them
