ALBUM REVIEW: Hounds Of Perdition – Wolfhorde

Hounds Of Perdition is the anticipated new album from Finnish folk metal underdogs WOLFEHORDE. A band that probably requires no introduction in their homeland but one which seem fiercely intent on solidifying themselves amongst the ranks of already well established Finnish folk metal bands such as MOONSORROW, FINNTROLL and KORPIKLAANI. Having already won the hearts of fans around the world with their previous offerings this second full length studio album is set to either let loose Werihukka’s pack of ambitious wolves upon a thriving music scene or see them lost inside a blizzard of competition.

Like a chorus of ancestral spirits Chimera acts as a precursor for what is to come with an uplifting yet ominous introduction. An exceptionally epic composition of standards similar to that off battle-worn MOONSORROW yet retaining an air of unique Jari-esque craftsmanship this beautifully unpredictable track sets the bar and leaves you howling with approval. Doctor Of The Plague slyly follows, reeking of FINNTROLL influence whilst encapsulating all that WOLFHORDE are – both musically and lyrically. This tasty track comes accompanied with an entertaining music video filmed atop a frozen lake – a memorable, well written anthem that doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Like a hammer through ice Black Song totally changes the musical landscape of this unforeseen yet spectacular release showcasing all elements required for the ultimate power metal number. Frostbitten troll chants return just as you begin to miss them during the ironically named Towers Of Silence – a testament to WOLFHORDE‘s uncanny ability to be several different bands at once, fluctuating furiously as if to exhibit all the best features of Finnish metal as a whole. Forged in Ice is a delicious dish with all the ingredients to satisfy even the hungriest of folk metal warriors – epic choir-laden choruses, uplifting song-crafting and the captivating ability to transport you into more ancient, ancestral and magical times.

Kill The Light is no exception to this and like an inspiring hardened champion it augments what is already a remarkable force to be reckoned with. Finally the title track Hordes Of Perdition signals the end of a master crafted album in the form of a ten minute long epic – both encompassing this bands sensational musicianship as well as leaving an imprint on us so strong it would be incredibly difficult not to listen to this entire release all over again.

WOLFHORDE are set to conquer the folk metal world by storm with Hordes Of Perdition. Not only does it showcase almost all of the things we love most about Finnish metal but its masterfully written beyond epic proportions. Anyone who listens to folk metal will know that most of the worlds best bands come out of Finland yet for a band to successfully create a musical dialect which pays homage to all variations off Finnish metal is an outstanding feat. This album will warm your soul on the coldest and longest of winter nights and is highly recommended to anyone who appreciates folk metal.
