Dave Klussmann releases new song ‘CRUSH’

DAVE KLUSSMANN has released a new track!

As a result of COVID-19 putting some obstacles in between him and his other projects, the multi-talented musician who plays guitar for DEITIES and bass for NERVEWRECKER has been releasing a string of solo pieces this year. In his own words rather than sulking about it, he has decided to revisit his accumulated riff library and endeavoured to collaborate with other musicians in the scene to assist in bringing his work to life. CRUSH is the latest in his journey.

Speaking about the track he says, “my previous singles DECAY and IMPOSTER were both rather big riffy monster tracks, but there’s a certain openness to CRUSH that really sets it apart. This made selecting a vocalist quite difficult. To me, this song is less instrumental-focused and more of a canvas for the vocalist to project their vision upon. There are so many different directions it could’ve gone and I spent quite a lot of time racking my brains over who I should ask to sing on it, but as soon as Liam popped up in my head, I knew he’d be the guy. Liam is such a versatile vocalist and he really shows that on CRUSH, his performance is so refreshing to me, he’s given the song new life and turned it into something completely unique. I’m very proud of what Liam and I have created and I’m excited for people to hear it!”

Dave selected Liam Hesslewood as his vocalist of choice, he already has a proven track record with the genre-splicing NESHIIMA and was a natural fit for the result he was hoping to achieve with CRUSH. Talking about his involvement and his thought process going into this piece, Liam says “When Dave approached me regarding this track, I was super keen as I’ve followed Dave’s work with DEITIES and as a YouTuber. To gain the fullest picture, I’d been dealing with an awful day of blatant online racism. In light of the shitstorm that is 2020 with all its neo-fascist encouragement in the western world, and having to defend my own personal right to breathe air in my own fucking country, this track gave me some ground to plant a soapbox. If this track was the inch I needed – you best believe I was going to take a mile.

When it came to writing the lyrics for this song, I didn’t even intend to vocalise in the initial instrumental section, but when it came to recording, I felt the intense urge to scream “we’re going to make you beg”… the ‘you’ being anyone who’s caused unforgivable abuse toward someone based on their skin colour, gender or sexual orientation. I don’t know why but once I started writing the lyrics for this track – I couldn’t stop.”

“That said, the verse that follows is absolutely orientated around my own personal involvement and feeling with regard to the protests to humanise Blackness in the UK. Despite the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson stating that Britain shouldn’t apologise for its colonial past, he fails to represent anyone of Black background with this statement. It’s slaver talk and needs to be addressed, and so the lyric about ‘indifference beneath the nose’ is absolutely for you – Boris – You perfect example of Eton education.

When people talk about certain lives mattering – it seems to be that a certain class of humans who preach that they value all life would fail to cover their nose with a mask in public during a pandemic, believe that 5G is death and that Black people who subscribe to their lives having meaning are all genocidal maniacs. The lyric ‘The sum of a life amounts to none’ is kinda pessimistic but it’s absolutely how I felt when I saw George Floyd’s life being taken from him, like many others before. The weeks that followed, I personally saw many reports of Trans communities being shaken by abuse from bigots too. What the fuck happened to us as a race?? The verses are definitely twinned with a chorus about inward healing and enabling yourself to continue the fight against a foul corner of society that is stunting the growth of humanity. I want to thank Dave for letting me loose. This track was therapy for me, and I hope that the listener can find their voice within the lyrics here too.”
