EP REVIEW: Glow – Chapter and Verse

London based alt rockers CHAPTER AND VERSE have just wrapped up a few dates with Kentucky heavyweights EMAROSA so some lucky people may have already had the pleasure of hearing some of their impending E.P. entitled Glow which is due for release on 25th January via self release. The quartet have already received heaps of praise including flattering comments from METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. Let’s see what the fuss is about shall we?

The Casket eases the listener in with some chilled tones and smooth vocals. Josh Carter has a very distinctive vocal delivery which enables him to provoke emotion from each and every word, this is by no means an easily achievable feat. As you begin to drift along with the soothing vibe the track energetically bursts into life with punchy, vibrant instrumentation. The transition amplifies the emotive state even further getting Glow off to a positive, dramatic start. The follow-up Magazines continues the liveliness with impactful drum work as torrents of passionate layered vocals flow throughout.  The interlude provides a particularly theatrical atmosphere to proceedings as the intensity begins to boil over with some razor sharp riffing and fiery screams towards the latter stages.

Eleven Hours In Real Time opens with prominent bass lines and subtle guitar work meandering in the background. Infectious melodies effortlessly wash over the track which will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. A Devil In Blue provides quite an unexpected turn as CHAPTER AND VERSE tread down the line of post-hardcore rhythms further elevating the energy levels. The quartet sure know how to keep the listener guessing. As Glow comes to the final chapter Ink offers an emotionally driven bout of musicianship which immerses you in swathes of addictively cathartic lyricism further emphasising the sheer diversity on offer from this collection of tracks.

The most impressive factor about Glow is that all five songs sound completely different but mesh together with ease and they leave you eager for more. The instrumentation and lyrical content is engaging, relatable and so easily accessible that if CHAPTER AND VERSE can continue this level of intriguing variety they will most certainly be one to watch for the future.

Rating: 9/10
