ALBUM REVIEW: Charismatic Leaders – Wheel

Progressive metal trio WHEEL have gone from strength to strength off the back of the release of 2021’s Resident Human, acquiring a loyal fanbase from their worldwide touring exploits. The highly anticipated follow-up entitled Charismatic Leaders is available now via InsideOut Music and is set to take them to the next step in their inspiring evolution.

Empire surges out of the gates with a frenetic tempo packed full of energetic instrumentation. The combination of crunchy heaviness and enthralling, emotive vocal lines is one of WHEEL‘s most impressive qualities and this is showcased front and centre in this emphatic opener. Porcelain explores the more expansive, experimental side of their repertoire. Cleverly layered atmospherics and prominent bass sequences assist in bringing out the varying shades and melodies of their diverse soundscape. Submission pushes the envelope further with a sprawling 10-minute epic exhibiting tense fluctuations in pace, technical flourishes and evocative tones. The intelligently constructed prose from frontman James Lascelles has you hanging from every syllable.

Saboteur delves into a darker, grittier sound, introducing twisting and turning riff work that is coiled to strike at any moment. The rush of adrenaline provided by the explosive midway segment is enough to make you want to run headfirst through a brick wall. Disciple returns to the sprightly unpredictability to keep you on your toes. The fact that WHEEL possess the ability to cram just as much exhilaration into their shorter offerings is a testament to their masterful craftsmanship. Caught In The Afterglow provides a brief yet haunting acoustic interlude leading into the sombre stylings of The Freeze. The scattered subtleties amplify the emotions that abundantly flow through this effort. The intensity begins to simmer, as you anticipate the eruption. Before you know it you are encapsulated in a wave of invigorating experimentation that concludes this release on a euphoric high.

Charismatic Leaders will have you engaged from start to finish as WHEEL utilise every second of runtime to its full potential. It is brimming with inviting transitions between light and dark pulling the listener along for the journey. Elements of pure escapism meticulously mesh with enticing grooves that will have you frantically reaching for the replay button. If you have been sleeping on this talented outfit, this is your wake up call.
