ALBUM REVIEW: Detriment – Entry

The state of California feels a lot less picturesque when you’re listening to LA hardcore punks ENTRY. Their abrasive, ‘take names, ask later’ approach to their caustic throes is exactly as frantic as it sounds. Born out of a desire from vocalist Sara G and guitarist Clayton Stephens [TOUCHE AMORE] to take nods at their punk peers; ENTRY have quickly transitioned from a fun side project to a band with a no frills, cut throat delivery.

Sitting at nine songs and a mere 13 minutes in length, Detriment is a violent yet memorable sprint to the finish line. From ROTTING OUT and CRO-MAGS to MINOR THREAT and CONVERGE,ENTRY cover almost every base of punk/hardcore’s extremities over the last four decades.

That’s not to say that Detriment is a mere assembly of parts we’ve already heard though. These Feelings and Control have a level of authority and at times straight up groove over their jagged delivery from Sara that they ooze individuality. The slightly more mid-tempo approach of Selective Empathy is a welcome addition too – and ENTRY sound truly at home blending a This Is The Six-era WHILE SHE SLEEPS with the crooked, punk edge of RANCID.

Intro and Demons book end the record and make intelligent steps at rewriting Detriment‘s playbook. The unrelenting fury that you’ll find scattered throughout the album isn’t dissipated here by any means, but instead given a new arm. Demons in particular is an undeniably harrowing rendition of what ENTRY can do when their intensity is pushed towards atmosphere and not outright pace.

One of the more ‘straight to the point’ records you’ll have encountered in some time – Detriment is a quarter of an hour of anger, passion, and aggression delivered all at once. Sure, its target market may be considered niche in the grand scheme of alternative music, but ENTRY nail down the basics so well here that it’s not hard to picture them being an extra, violent shot in the arm for hardcore punk.

Rating: 7/10

Detriment is set for release on July 17th via Southern Lord Recordings.
