ALBUM REVIEW: Infinite Mind – Lee McKinney

Lee McKinney has been traversing the States in support of BORN OF OSIRIS‘ latest release The Simulation and somehow he has still found the time to develop his own solo project. Infinite Mind is available now via Sumerian Records, will this release be the beginning of a new and exciting endeavour?

Clock Without A Craftsmen gets the ball rolling with some vibrant riffing and an energetic beat which coolly slides into an immersive wave of saxophone work before Amanuensis takes a more djent influenced approach with some crunchy guitar work and snappy drumming. The layered riffs adds an extra level of intrigue into the composition. Rising Tide continues the high energy with some captivating instrumentation. No particular element feels like it is battling for prominence, it all just meshes together in seamless harmony and you can feel yourself drifting away alongside the melodies.

The Sun And The Wind exhibits one of the catchiest riffs you’ll hear this year and will have you returning for another dose. McKinney has definitely put a lot of thought into how these tracks would translate in a live environment and this would be the ideal candidate. A Neverending Explosion ups the intensity with some elaborate drumming whilst maintaining the soothing qualities of its predecessors. The various intricacies are tasteful and help to enhance the track. Astrolabe flexes its muscles with some sweeping riffs but treads a very leisurely, relaxing pace. The synths which flow through the background of the track help in building a dramatic atmosphere.

Truthsayer witnesses a return of the down-tuned burly riffing which provides the ideal teammate for the enticing lead work. The concluding title track Infinite Mind throws one final burst of fret melting guitar work into the mix making sure that the upbeat vibe continues to flow through until the final notes

Without any vocals leading the way an entirely instrumental effort requires a lot of careful consideration to ensure it maintains the listener’s attention and Infinite Mind feels like you’re being taken on an emotional journey through its chapters. The tracks are very digestible and don’t get too carried away with technicality. McKinney has expertly harnessed his adept talents gathered through his many years of being a part of BORN OF OSIRIS but managed to ensure that this project carries its own identity. If you love indulging in some masterfully executed guitar work then don’t overlook this fine effort!
