ALBUM REVIEW: A Beautiful Place To Drown – Silverstein

To have a career reaching the 20 year milestone is amazing for any band, but especially for emo band SILVERSTEIN. It’s also the tenth studio album for the band to be released, so to celebrate both in the same year is one of a kind, so that album would have to be something unbelievable. So how does A Beautiful Place to Drown fair for the band and compare to their previous releases?

Impressive actually. It’s true to the emo/pop-punk sound, while also being fresh and vibrant within the music and tackling different and unique topics within the lyrics. Each song is rich and vibrant, for example, with Where Are You, Infinite, All On Me and Stop. Each song presents fantastic lyrics that keep that pop-punk/emo style whilst also taking new perspectives and viewpoints, for example, All On Me is very sweet and ethereal, Burn It Down has lyrics that are fittingly fiery, and Shape Shift is simple yet effective throughout their writing.

This is also elevated by the vocals, which can have a lot of grit and power to them but can also be soft and beautiful depending on the track, each fits within the theme that is needed. But one point that makes this album stand out is the number of features on some of the songs, including Aaron Gillespie of UNDEROATH and Pierre Bouvier of SIMPLE PLAN, each varying in quality. For example, the featured solo from Aaron Marshall of INTERVALS in Bad Habits is extremely good and really shows off the talent of the guitarist and it helps that the solo fits in well with the rest of the music within the instrumentation. On the other end, Bouvier’s vocals in Take What You Give jump out within the mix and the nasally sound is very off-putting.

Overall, A Beautiful Place to Drown is a strong album and another that SILVERSTEIN can promote proudly and perform with a smile on their faces. Not only that, but it is also something that shows they can progress as musicians without sacrificing their style to appeal to the mass market. A Beautiful Place to Drown has the best of both worlds for both newcomers to the band and longtime fans, so it’s definitely one to recommend spinning with the rest of their back-catalogue.
