EP REVIEW: A Eulogy For Wasted Time – Solcura

Making their rebellious return following their 2021 debut record Serotonin, Bournemouth rock outfit SOLCURA have brought out a five-song epic in the form of their latest EP A Eulogy For Wasted Time.

A release that the band have been teasing since last year, this is a triumphant continuation of the sound of their debut full-length – only with an added jagged edge to draw blood with. Opening with Keep It Close, the track fades in so subtly and so softly until the group dive straight in. As the guitars start, the electricity shoots straight through. The flames are burning through the fingers. The attitudes are rude and crude, and it’s enough to get anyone hooked from the first three-minute chapter of this rocking-rolling storybook.

The attitude comes to its conceitedly confident, greatly catchy height with God Now. The demand for power and attention, for every word to be followed and every command to be acted upon, is a theme that is synonymous with heavy rock. It’s not asking for respect, it’s demanding it or else. This is felt throughout this track, as the pace runs through faster than the speed of light at first and then becomes slower and more concentrated in the second half. Losing faith and gaining a sense of importance; it’s the meat on the bones of metal and SOLCURA know it. They know it, they feel it, and they own it.

The band bring out a renovated metal sound for closing track Panacea. It ties the events together perfectly, seeing off the listener with some of the most thrilling elements found. The nu-metal-feeling intro, the layered harmonies within the chorus, and the repetition of “Look at me now” as the song plays for its extended entirety. Panacea plays as if a medley: one sound after the other, flowing and weaving along each other, to make the overall product something fully completed and actualised. Ending the story with a summary that gives everyone the ride of their life. Ups and downs, louds and quiets. That free movement is what alternative music is all about and is nothing without that freedom. SOLCURA are embracing that.

With only a handful of tunes, this badass band have found their sound once again. They’ve measured it out, they have their levels and numbers just right, and this is the result of such an experiment. There is no wasted time when it comes to SOLCURA.
