EP REVIEW: Go To Hell – Felicette

Forged in the DIY scene, FELICETTE are named after the first and only cat to end up in space and are known for their 90s-inspired alternative rock music. The members have also played and are playing in bands such as SUPERMILKCHEERBLEEDERZ, DOEMATAGOT and PAINTER, and their debut EP Go To Hell covers topics such as anxiety, men abusing their positions of power, and friendships dissolving.

Despite comprising only four songs, the band make each second count. Small Man, Big Ideas is only two and a half minutes long, but it gets to the point straight away and the straightforward lyrics ensure that the song leaves no unnecessary detail in and present a masterclass in storytelling as the soft-rock instruments allow the vocals to shine. This is evident throughout the album. Regardless of the genre of the song, whether it is stuttering guitar-led rock of Palpitations or the surprisingly acoustic-to-electric-rock of the title track, the lyrics carry the EP. They are intricately crafted in a way that is vague enough that the listener can interpret them to their own life, while also true to the band’s life, with closing song Helen being a heartbreaking story of what happens when a friendship becomes one-sided. The desperation in the chorus is extremely palpable as the narrator begs their friend to tell them what’s going on.

Music wise, this EP covers the closely-related likes of soft rock, indie rock and alternative rock, with the band free to experiment within this without it sounding forced. In fact, this is a polished debut. FELICETTE clearly know what they want their sound to be, and by only having four songs, the EP is cohesive and easy to follow along. The pacing of the EP is steady, with the first two songs being faster and the last two songs a bit longer such that the EP feels longer than its 12-minute runtime. That’s not a bad thing; it just shows how much care the band have put into their first body of work.

Overall, Go To Hell is a fun, well-written and musically unique EP. FELICETTE clearly know what they want out of the band and here they have produced an EP that is full of candour, with lyrics that tell a story that doesn’t feel unfinished when the songs end. Their experimentation doesn’t feel forced, and the end result is a cohesive EP that makes it clear that FELICETTE have a bright future ahead of them.
