EP REVIEW: Species – Crossfaith

CROSSFAITH are arguably the hottest metal prospect to ever come out of Japan, armed with so much unwavering energy that it spurs their crowds into a wild frenzy. It has been a couple of years since their last full length EX_MACHINA hit the shelves and the band are ready to take the next step in the shape of EP Species which is available now via UNFD. Will this release help satiate their ever hungry fan-base?

Digital Parasite bursts in like a rampaging bull with thumping drum blasts and frontman Kenta Koie‘s signature screams. Booming bass beats and a hip hop inspired segment emphatically reiterate that CROSSFAITH are comfortable in their own skin and are not afraid of getting experimental. Razor sharp riffing make this one hell of an opener. Endorphin continues the incendiary energy levels fusing electronica with crushing metal hooks. An incredibly addictive chorus injects some melody to take the edge off the building aggression. Truth Of Insanity gets down and dirty as sinister riffing and rapid fire kick drums up the ante. Another earworm of a chorus burst is crying out for an audience to belt it back at them at the top of their lungs. A monstrous breakdown takes hold of the track, adding another deadly level to their arsenal.

None Of Your Business still harnesses the feverish intensity of its predecessors but slick rapping provided by Jin Dogg and ominous synths create a particularly intriguing soundscape. Jabbing riff work and shrill screams assist in supplementing the unnerving vibe. Before you know it the curtain closer is at hand in the form of Your Song. This track possesses a particularly dramatic, emotive quality about it that enhances the overall composition. Powerful guitar work combines seamlessly with impassioned vocal lines followed by one further impactful chorus to get effectively embedded in your memory.

In recent times CROSSFAITH have branched out their sound in a variety of different directions whilst continuing to stay cohesive and true to all the invigorating elements that brought them such adoration throughout their journey. Species is a compacted burst packed with fury and fun that will greatly please their existing fans as well as grab the attention of any potential newcomers. If you’re new to the weird and wonderful world of CROSSFAITH this is the ideal appetiser to get you acquainted.
