EP REVIEW: The Pendulum – Candlemass

Swedish doom metal staples CANDLEMASS are a band that require no introduction. They have been the blueprint for the genre for over 30 years and are blessing us with further material to add to their cavernous catalogue in the shape of The Pendulum which is out now via Napalm Records. What will this release bring to the table?

The Pendulum commences with an initial wave of soothing acoustic tones before picking up the pace with some sprightly, signature doom ridden riffing. The powerful falsetto work of Johan Längquist is incredibly alluring and impressive lead work tops off the opener. Snakes Of Goliath displays a more expected, methodical pace with distorted guitar work. As the song progresses it begins to delve into the realms of stoner influenced stylings to add some further diversity.

Sub Zero sees a return of the acoustic work allowing for an additional brief bout of escapism before the arrival of the minimalistic, bass driven Aftershock, which is a slightly superfluous inclusion. Porcelain Skull gets back to business with a steady, purposeful stride. Längquist‘s vocals lead the charge with their dramatic prose and projection taking the spotlight. Further expertly executed solo pieces are displayed towards the latter stages. The Cold Room once again throws another curve ball. This time in the form of a piano/acoustic duet that in any other circumstances may have been more appropriate if utilised as an interlude, not as a climactic track.

It is always admirable when a band who has nothing left to prove continues to release quality material. It may not be life changing but at this stage in their career, there is absolutely no need for CANDLEMASS to meddle with their sound. Whilst the inclusion of the experimental tinkering was an enjoyable burst of instrumental creativity it did little to add any form of cohesion to the overall product and if anything caused more confusion. Devoted fans of the band will appreciate this release but it may be quickly overlooked from passers by.
