EP REVIEW: War Boys – Dead Pony

A lot of people see emo as a scene that really died out sometime just after the late 2000s, but not Scotland’s DEAD PONY. Their new EP War Boys is out now and it’s filled with nostalgic emo-fuelled tracks that make it feel like the scene never left.

Bullet Farm opens the EP and it instantly gets under your skin. It feels a little more laid back during the verses however it really takes off in the choruses and soars. The chugging guitar part is great and provides a solid basis for the track. It’s then followed by Zero which feels more full-on throughout the whole track. It’s more in your face and the choruses are chaotic and the distortion is so heavy it’s awesome. This is the one that’s going to get the crowds going as the solo in Zero is head-banging perfection.

I Don’t Need A Lot is raw in the vocals which are great on every track. It’s not super high complex stuff but simpler hence the name of the song. The guitar and bass bounce off each other perfectly to create a driving feel during the verses and a heavy chorus.

DEAD PONY incorporate a distinct 90s grunge feel in All Dressed Up For Nothing with simplistic verses and really opening it up in the chorus. It chugs along at a lazy pace throughout which gives it a more relaxed feeling and the chorus although a little heavier still is still chilled out. Next up is the title track War Boys. This one is chaotic and it feels like it’s really just the band letting loose. It hits hard as it’s one of the heavier tracks. The solo is super punchy and this track is surely a belter.

23, Never Me closes up the EP and it’s a pretty great one to end on. It has an anthemic sound to it. This track is filled with big hooks and a great little riff that keeps the punk sound that the band was going for on this particular track.

Despite DEAD PONY still being a fairly young band, they have really shown what they can do and that they know their stuff with War Boys. If they keep writing music like this then the future certainly looks bright for them.

Rating: 7/10
