EP REVIEW: Will This Hold Together? – Brave Liaison

Cambridge-based alternative rockers BRAVE LIAISON are back with their new EP Will This Hold Together?, and although it’s only four tracks long it shows exactly what the band have been up to recently.

Opening track DEAD kicks off the record and opens on a high with the vocals coming in immediately and the frantic guitar part creating a chaotic texture. The chorus really takes off with their anthemic sound and the shouts of “DEAD!” conjure images of audience participation which is exactly why these guys have had an impressive run of live shows. Better Off feels a little more put together with a clearer structure as this track sounds more like a straight-up rock song and leaves off the punkier tones from the first. The guitars are fast and heavily distorted except for in the bridges where they take off riding on the effects. The vocals are low and defiant and the lyrics are really catchy.

The third track Spike is a lot of fun with that same frantic feeling on the guitars and the stabs in the bridges are heavy and demand attention. The main thing here is the solo. It’s a blistering part that whilst not overly complicated has maximum effect and works as the cherry on top of this track. Situations is the fourth and final track on this EP and it’s a little departure from the rest. It’s a little heavier and has a much more singalong feel. The guitars are distorted and unrelenting; the drums feel a little more prominent and they are super tight; and ultimately this track gets under the skin and keeps going well after it has ended.

Will This Hold Together? is a good little EP from BRAVE LIAISON. Maybe a little variation in the songs wouldn’t go amiss as any fan of the band knows they are capable of switching things up a little, but this is an EP and it’s just supposed to be a small collection of good songs and that’s exactly what it is.

Rating: 7/10
