INTRODUCING: Derelict Dream

Sometimes to get to the heart of what a band capture in their sound, all you have to do is know their name. “I was trying to come up with the best way of describing the feeling of someone’s own personal hell. Like a dream you can never wake up from.” Lou, vocalist of the band DERELICT DREAM succinctly explains. The very essence of what DERELICT DREAM is one that taps into the depths of your head and makes audible the feelings of despair, wonder and confusion of the subconscious mind. The kind of oppressive can send you a little crazy, and that’s just what the band provide with their music.

The sound they produce is one that truly pushes from the heaviest side of the spectrum to the most serene and moving. Oddly enough, while the subject matter and the feel of the music can be deep and challenging, the members themselves are a easy going and quick to joke.

Having formed back around 2014, the band had a few iterations before finding its final form in its current state. “Before I joined the band, I was a fan so I regularly attended shows before I got offered the gig! Also I had a habit of running into Lou at other gigs (Devin Townsend and PSYCHOSTICK spring to mind!),” Ant (bass) recounts. “I met Scott back in school when I used to jam with his brother, while wasted of course, teenage bassists are a predictable bunch!”

The rest of the band recount their beginnings just as fondly. “METAL!” Scott (drums) jovially exclaims, “And a bit of drinking, I met Ant in my garage jamming METALLICA with my brother (rich kid moment, I had a studio in my garage) and I just joined in.”

“I started the band about 5/6 years ago, and after a few incarnations, Ant took up the bass duties and Scott took up the drums,” adds Lou. “Needless to say, our sound has come very far since the beginning!”

Covering a range of genres in their own style, DERELICT DREAM a blend of star gazer serenity, their blitzing thrash rhythms and tech guitar work makes for some brutal and beautiful musical moments. Vocally diverse, the expanse of areas DERELICT DREAM allows for a truly imaginative soundscape to unfold. Sometimes beautiful and understated, often terrifically chaotic, with huge pulls into a darker realm that pushes the boundaries. “I have to say since the beginning I have been massively influenced by OPETH and Mikael Åkerfeldt lyrics,” Lou notes. You can gauge that such bands and artists have a dark side, but also enjoy playing with expectations. It’s from this mindset that DERELICT DREAM capture some of their finest moments. In terms of their musical direction, Ant, while mocking of their intentions, sums up the focus. “I stay out of the lyrics ‘cos I can’t take anything seriously. Musically our aim for each EP going forward is to apply a unique musical concept to our sound.”

Essentially, anything that creates a menacing, domineering vibes pulls into DERELICT DREAMS sound. “We play off of a very broad spectrum of influences from traditional and modern metal stuff to classical and even a bit of EDM stuff. Anything that can be loud and oppressive has a place in our sound! Also Lou’s really tall so that helps!”

As well as on their self recorded EP Human, which is set for release at the end of March, their sound and attitude translate to a wonderful blend of high voltage, menacing music with the stage presence of a band just enjoying the moment. “I love showing what we’ve made to people, it’s seriously is the best feeling. Also joking with the audience is just great, we love heckling!” Lou beams, while Ant jokes, “It’s the closest thing I get to exercise! Nah, just getting to blast some brutal metal to unsuspecting, and suspecting audiences in some cases is just awesome! Way better than exercise.”
