EP REVIEW: Dawn Of Corruption – Distant

Unique Leader Records arguably have one of the most impressive rosters on the metal circuit and one of their most enticing prospects is the devastating deathcore outfit known as DISTANT. They grabbed the attention of the world with their emphatic Tyrannotophia release last year and to strike while the iron is hot and take advantage of the large periods of lockdown the six piece are due to unleash another round of pure hell in the shape of EP Dawn Of Corruption which is out now. What will this effort have in store for us?

Hull Of Crows jumps straight into the devils living room with thunderous, bludgeoning riffing and ear-piercing screams that form one hell of an introduction. This neatly tees up the sonic assault of title track Dawn Of Corruption where the instrumentation is utterly demonic, relentlessly hammering holes into your skull. As it progresses the jarring pacing creates an even more devastating impact. Hellmouth somehow manages to up the ante with an additional barrage of stomping intensity that feels like the audible equivalent of the end of the days. Pummeling blast beats and ferocious growls enhance the unravelling brutality.

Oedepism comes hurtling into view in rapid fashion, hitting you headfirst with another round of sheer violence. This track injects some adrenaline fuelled grooves and mouth watering solo segments into the mix which seamlessly coincide with the blunt force trauma. Temple Of Taglaroth offers up some quirky distorted elements amongst the early stages before dragging you closer to the eye of the storm with barbaric vocal onslaughts that will make your hairs stand on end in sheer terror. Expertly executed sweeping adds an emphatic exclamation point.

The Void lures you into a false sense of security with some atmospheric melodies that are swiftly negated by rampaging carnage. The restrained pacing proves to be incredibly deadly and after thrashing you around for a brief period it disappears into the ether, leaving you to pick up the pieces of your dissected carcass.

It’s very rare that having your ear drums caved in is so thrilling and enjoyable but this is exactly what DISTANT bring to the table. It is very easy for this style of music to become dull and predictable but Dawn Of Corruption keeps shifting gears with each passing moment and it leaves your head almost spinning off your shoulders. Despite it’s short run time it makes every second count with its savage levels of unwavering intensity. The future looks incredibly bright for this six piece and if they carry on at this frightening pace who knows what they will be capable of.
